IBM has boosted its software performance by hosting more metadata on SSDs.

IBM Storage Ceph is IBM’s enterprise-supported distribution of the open-source Ceph software-defined storage platform for file, block and object storage. Built on the open-source Ceph project (RADOS + RBD + CephFS + RGW/S3), IBM acquired the enterprise Ceph offering from Red Hat in early 2023. It runs on standard x86 server hardware, with optional IBM Storage Ready Nodes bundling validated hardware and software, and targets hybrid-cloud, AI/ML, data lakehouse, and large-scale enterprise workloads.

IBM Storage Ceph includes the BlueFS storage feature with up to three device tiers:
---WAL – fastest (write-ahead log / journal),
---DB – intermediate (metadata),
---SLOW – the primary, slower data device; the large block device holding actual object data, typically HDDs, and acting as a spillover target.

DB is an optional dedicated faster device, usually SSD or NVMe, storing BlueStore’s internal metadata. BlueStore leverages an embedded database for metadata such as object-to-block mappings. The DB device stores as much of this RocksDB data as possible. If the DB device reaches capacity, metadata automatically spills over to the main data device.

Key capabilities in this latest Ceph release:

---RGW S3 Object Browser enhancements – advanced object discovery via metadata and tag-based

---search, streamlined bulk management for large datasets, simplified data handling, and stronger security governance,
---Virtual-Host S3 domains configuration inside the Ceph dashboard offers a simplified, centralized method to set up virtual-hosted-style S3 access for Ceph Object Gateway environments via the RGW service

The BlueFS Spillover Cleaner keeps high-value, frequently accessed metadata on faster DB media while moving less active data to lower-cost storage. It improves application performance by automatically promoting hot RocksDB files to the DB device, raising metadata access efficiency, delivering more consistent Ceph cluster performance and reduced latency for business-critical workloads.
